World Migratory Bird Day

Saturday, May 11th

This year’s theme focuses on the importance of insects and their impact on migratory birds. Insects are essential sources of energy for many migratory bird species, supporting their extensive journeys and greatly affecting the timing, duration, and overall success of bird migrations.

The loss and disturbance of insect populations along avian migration routes threatens bird survival and well-being.

Featured species this year include: The American Kestrel, the Wood Duck, and Cliff Swallow, as well as some of their important foods:  the Red-legged Grasshopper, the Giant Water Scavenger Beetle and the Vivid Dancer Damselfly.
