The SAS “Plants for Bird” Demonstration Garden at Story Mill Community Park was completed by SAS volunteers in the summer of 2020. It was the brain-child of SAS Conservation Chair Paulette Epple, and under her capable leadership, it has come to fruition. The garden showcases trees, shrubs and flowers that provide a benefit to birds and other pollinators. Most of the plants are native to Montana, which require less water and maintenance. As urban growth and new subdivisions alter the native landscape, bird-friendly yards are becoming extremely important in the survival of our native songbirds, bees and butterflies. You can do your part, whether you have a large yard or a small patio. By doing so, you will conserve water, eliminate chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and beautify your garden, all while creating needed habitat. In the future SAS plans to hold workshops on how to create beautiful bird-friendly gardens. The garden is located within the Learning Garden, directly east of the main park entrance off of Bridger Drive.

Thanks to our many volunteers who helped rake, shovel, dig, plant, & mulch! You all made it happen! Special thanks to Linda Iverson for her expertise in creating the landscaping plan.  The garden also features a large interpretive sign designed by Katie Christiansen, as well as botanical signs for each plant.

We hope you will stop by the Learning Garden and see what’s growing.
