Motus June 23rd Update

Pretty Cool. Our various projects beginning to integrate together! This was a male Kestrel that we tagged and banded in early June as part of our Kestrel Nest Box program. Males will incubate approximately 25% of the time, so we felt lucky to be able to track a male. The map is the kestrel getting picked up by the Indreland Audubon Tower approximately 11 miles away. Granted not a huge distance, but showing the behavior and range of this particular bird.

This is amazing! Ten Wilson’s Phalaropes were tagged by MT FWP at Freezout Lake to study the relationship between these birds and saline lakes. Check out Motus.org to view the different travels and flight paths with these birds. Anyways, On June 21st, one of these birds (#. ) triggered three towers in the system. Our Gallatin River tower being one of them. What is amazing is that this bird traveled from Freezout to the Gallatin River in 3 hours and 12 minutes averaging 68km/hr! It then kept going and was detected 3 hours and 10 minutes later near Idaho Falls (in Ririe, ID) for an average of 62 km/hr! Incredible.
