As you are likely aware, on March 15, 2023, the National Audubon Society’s (NAS) Board of Directors announced that after a lengthy process to examine its name—in light of the personal history of its namesake, John James Audubon—it decided to retain the name of the organization. The decision was made after considering many factors, including the complexity of John James Audubon’s legacy and how the decision would impact NAS’s mission to protect birds and the places they need long into the future.

Without doubt, some NAS members will agree with the Board’s decision and others will differ. But, we should keep at the forefront that WE ALL can coalesce around the mission and task of NAS—that of saving and protecting birds and the habitats they depend on.

Please see the Open Letter from Dr. Elizabeth Gray, CEO of NAS, on the NSA website, as well as the many other articles provided.
