Sacajawea Audubon Area Christmas Bird Counts 2026/2027

December 16, 2026 @ 8:00 am – January 5, 2027 @ 5:00 pm

It’s time to get ready for our annual Christmas Bird Counts!

Everyone from beginner to expert birder is invited to participate in this world-wide citizen science effort. All Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) are conducted between December 14 and January 5 every year, in established 15-mile diameter circles. Local count compilers and volunteers follow specific routes through the area, counting every bird they see or hear throughout the day.

Sacajawea Audubon Society hosts a total of 7 counts, starting with Ennis on the 1st Wednesday of the count period, and ending with the Ruby Valley count usually held just after the New Year. Specific dates will be posted later this fall.

If your house is within a count circle, you can also report the birds that visit your feeder as long as you’ve made arrangements with your local count compiler. (Even if you’re outside of a CBC circle, you can always add your detections to eBird at any time!)

Most counts begin and/or end with a social gathering and lots of camaraderie, and are an annual tradition we always look forward to!

For more information, contact Sam Koenen (email) or call (406)600-7502. Participation in all counts is free.
