SUMMARY:October 12th - The Endangered Species Act - Monthly Program
DESCRIPTION:SAS Monthly Program & Membership Meeting: Monday\, October 12th \n\n\n\nThe Endangered Species Act: 50 Years of Conservation Success-And an Uncertain Future with Tim Preso \n\n\n\nEndangered Florida Scrub Jay. Photo: Zach Stern\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFor more than 50 years\, the Endangered Species Act has stood as our nation’s most powerful environmental law. Enacted to stem a rising tide of extinctions that threatened to claim even our national symbol\, the Bald Eagle\, the Act represented a decision by our nation to do what no country had done before\, establishing what amounts to a bill of rights for animals and plants. Half a century later\, the Act’s track record of success speaks for itself: it has prevented the extinction of 99 percent of species that have come under its protection and recovered many – including the Bald Eagle\, Brown Pelican\, and Peregrine Falcon – from their formerly imperiled status. Now\, however\, due to recent regulatory changes\, the future of the Endangered Species Act looks uncertain\, prompting the writer Terry Tempest Williams to wonder recently in the New York Times: “What if 50 years from now\, having plundered America the Beautiful and destroyed the habitat for the creatures around us\, we are plagued by an inconsolable loneliness because so many species have left us?” \n\n\n\n\n\nTim Preso is an environmental lawyer who has spent more than 25 years working to protect some of our nation’s most iconic wildlands and wildlife\, first as managing attorney of Earthjustice’s office in the Northern Rockies and more recently as leader of the organization’s national biodiversity program. He is a recognized expert in public lands\, wildlife\, and natural resources law who has worked to enforce the Endangered Species Act on behalf of species ranging from grizzly bears to Red Kknots. Tim is also a Bozeman birder and occasional leader of SAS field trips. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMembership Meeting Program Info. \n\n\n\nThe in-person meeting will be held Monday\, October 12\, 2026 at Hope Lutheran Church\, 2152 West Graf (off S. 19th). A social begins at 6:30 PM; the program begins at 7:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own reusable cups. \n\n\n\nFor virtual attendance\, please register at: \n\n\n\nhttps://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/5529150863865294684 \n\n\n\nAttendees—whether in person or virtual—are encouraged to share their bird sightings at this and every monthly program. \n\n\n\nSAS monthly programs are free and open to the public\, featuring a special guest speaker the 2nd Monday of each month\, September through May. SUMMARY:Ennis Lake Waterfowl Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Leader: George Nixon 406-219-6169  hawkowl526@gmail.com  \n\n\n\nMeet at 7:45 am at the Museum of the Rockies \n\n\n\nCarpool and depart at 8:00 am \n\n\n\nThis should be near the peak time for migrating waterfowl\, grebes\, and loons.  Ennis Lake is one of the premiere staging areas for migrating waterfowl in southwestern Montana.  Thousands of ducks can be spread across the lake on any given day.  As is typical with high concentrations of birds\, there should be a wide variety of waterfowl and the possibility of a rarity being found.   Bring a lunch and other essentials as we’ll be out until mid to late afternoon.  Also\, remember to bring plenty of warm clothes as it could be cold and windy at the lake. If you have a spotting scope\, please bring it for scanning the lake.  Limit 12 people or 5 vehicles.  For more information and to make reservations\, contact George.

SUMMARY:November Program - New Home on the Range
DESCRIPTION:New Home on the Range: Reintroducing Sharp-tailed Grouse to Western Montana \n\n\n\nPROGRAM \n\n\n\nSharp-tailed Grouse were once abundant in intermountain grasslands west of the Continental Divide in Montana\, but populations declined as the region developed\, and sharp-tails became locally extirpated by the early 2000s. However\, sharp-tails still thrive in the prairies of eastern Montana\, where each spring males gather at leks and perform their elaborate courtship dances. Montana Fish\, Wildlife & Parks began reintroducing Sharp-tailed Grouse to western Montana in 2021. Each spring\, sharp-tails are captured at leks in central and eastern Montana\, transported across the state by volunteers\, and released at sites in the Bitterroot\, Blackfoot\, and Drummond Valleys. To date\, more than 800 grouse have been translocated! \n\n\n\nEach Sharp-tailed Grouse receives a radio collar or a GPS transmitter\, allowing our research team to monitor them throughout the year using telemetry. We track female movements and habitat use as they find a home range\, search for a mate\, nest\, and raise a brood. We’ve been encouraged by the successful fledging of more than 200 chicks and the establishment of 5 new leks at the reintroduction sites. By studying translocated grouse\, we’ve learned what influences their behavior and survival after they are released\, helping us improve our conservation strategies. \n\n\n\nNow\, five years later\, Sharp-tailed Grouse are dancing in western Montana again. How can we make sure that they are here to stay? \n\n\n\nMembership Meeting Program Info. \n\n\n\nThe in-person meeting will be held Monday\, November 9\, 2026 at Hope Lutheran Church\, 2152 West Graf (off S. 19th). A social begins at 6:30 PM; the program begins at 7:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own reusable cups. \n\n\n\nFor virtual attendance\, please register at: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/2901854636854861920 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAttendees—whether in person or virtual—are encouraged to share their bird sightings at this and every monthly program. \n\n\n\nSAS monthly programs are free and open to the public\, featuring a special guest speaker the 2nd Monday of each month\, September through May. For more information\, contact programs@sacajaweaaudubon.org. \n\n\n\n ABOUT OUR SPEAKER \n\n\n\nLaura Dykstra is a Ph.D. candidate in the Wildlife Habitat Ecology Lab at Montana State University. She studies the movements and demography of Sharp-tailed Grouse reintroduced to western Montana\, in collaboration with Montana Fish\, Wildlife & Parks\, and has spent the past four summers tracking sharp-tails with radio collars across cattle ranches. Her research focuses on science-based wildlife conservation on working lands\, particularly on finding strategies to improve translocation outcomes. Laura received her M.S. from the University of Connecticut\, where she researched Mallards in exurban landscapes. She grew up in suburban southern Ohio\, where studying the Red-shouldered Hawk introduced her to wildlife research. She enjoys birding around Bozeman\, especially finding a Prairie Falcon on winter raptor surveys.

Just as a forest transitions upward from understory to midstory to overstory\, so too does the trajectory of Richie’s life—from the protective cover of adolescence to the precarious yet light-filled canopy of adulthood.Richie’s love for the wilds unfurls in poetic phrasing\, and her call to protect our last old-growth trees is resounding and clear. \n\n\n\nABOUT MARINA RICHIE \n\n\n\nMarina Richie is an award-winning nature writer with a passion for birds and wild places. Her book Halcyon Journey: In Search of the Belted Kingfisher received the 2024 John Burroughs Medal for distinguished natural history writing\, a 2022 National Outdoor Book Award (gold)\, and a Foreword Indies Award (silver). Through prose and poetry\, Marina seeks to bridge the divide separating people from nature. Her essays\, blogs\, and poems appear in popular and literary magazines. Marina has a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Montana and an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Oregon. She lives in Bend\, Oregon\, with her husband\, Wes\, and tends a bird-friendly yard. \n\n\n\nABOUT ASHLEY MARTENS \n\n\n\nAshley is the Intermountain West Regional Manager of the Old-Growth Forest Network. She grew up under the canopy of trees in the western US.  She gazed up at shimmering aspen leaves as a babe in Utah\, sought shade under ancient junipers when hunting arrowheads as a kid in Wyoming\, foraged wild mushrooms under old-growth cedars and hemlocks as a young adult in Idaho\, watched bald eagles raise their young under a giant Douglas Fir in Washington\, and currently gathers her community together under cottonwoods along creeks in Montana. Her educational and experiential background in ecology\, wildlife biology\, education\, restoration\, and mindfulness primed her perfectly for work with the Old-Growth Forest Network. Whenever she feels stressed or can’t sleep\, she imagines herself sitting on the mossy ground with her back resting against the soft trunk of a giant Grandmother Cedar Tree. In addition to her work with the Old-Growth Forest Network\, Ashley teaches are variety of nature-based classes through her business True Nature Education and the local Sacajawea Audubon Society. She loves all things wild\, and most especially birds.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://countrybookshelf.com/event/2026-11-22/marina-richie-conversation-ashley-martens
