SUMMARY:Fall Field Trips 2026 - Harrison Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Trip Leader: John Parker 406-586-5863 conundrumjp@gmail.com \n\n\n\nMeet at 7:45 am at the Museum of the Rockies.  Carpool and leave at 8 am. \n\n\n\nThe emphasis of this trip will be on waterfowl and shorebirds\, while exploring all the shorelines and other habitats around Harrison Reservoir.  September is the peak of the fall migration\, so we will likely be making other stops on the way to and from Harrison Reservoir to look for other migrants.  This trip will last until late afternoon\, so bring a lunch and anything else you may need for a day in the field.  Scopes will be especially useful on this trip\, as many of the birds will be distant.  There will be some walking over uneven terrain. \n\n\n\nParticipants limited to 10    \n\n\n\nTo reserve a spot on the trip or for more information please contact the trip leader.

SUMMARY:Monthly Program - Sept. 14th
DESCRIPTION:SAS Monthly Program & Membership Meeting: Monday\, September 14th \n\n\n\nWhere Golden Eagles Fly: 35 Years of Raptor Migration in the Bridger Mountains with Steve Hoffman \n\n\n\nFor 35 years\, the Bridger Mountains have provided a remarkable window into the annual migration of raptors across western North America. Since the project began in 1991\, observers have climbed the Bridgers each fall to document hawks\, eagles and falcons moving south along the Rocky Mountain Flyway. Among them\, the magnificent Golden Eagle has become one of the project’s most important and closely watched species. \n\n\n\nSteve Hoffman\, founder of HawkWatch International\, played a central role in establishing the Bridger Mountain Raptor Migration Project. His decades of experience have helped shape our understanding of raptor migration and the importance of long-term monitoring. \n\n\n\nThe project’s 35 years of observations have created an invaluable record of raptor migration through the Bridger Mountains. Consistent counts allow researchers to identify population trends and explore how weather\, habitat changes and other environmental pressures affect these remarkable birds. \n\n\n\nJoin us as Steve Hoffman looks back at the history of raptor migration research in the West and shares insights gained from decades of watching Golden Eagles and other raptors pass through the Bridgers. His presentation offers a unique perspective on why long-term migration projects matter: individual seasons provide snapshots\, but decades of observations reveal meaningful changes in bird populations and the ecosystems they depend upon. \n\n\n\nAfter 35 years\, the Bridger project stands as both a scientific achievement and a cherished community tradition—sustained by dedicated observers\, volunteers and the enduring fascination of watching thousands of raptors pass through Montana’s skies. \n\n\n\nMembership Meeting Program Info. \n\n\n\nThe in-person meeting will be held Monday\, September 14\, 2026 at Hope Lutheran Church\, 2152 West Graf (off S. 19th). A social begins at 6:30 PM; the program begins at 7:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own reusable cups. \n\n\n\nFor virtual attendance\, please register at: \n\n\n\nhttps://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/5529150863865294684 \n\n\n\nAttendees—whether in person or virtual—are encouraged to share their bird sightings at this and every monthly program. \n\n\n\nSAS monthly programs are free and open to the public\, featuring a special guest speaker the 2nd Monday of each month\, September through May. For more information\, contact programs@sacajaweaaudubon.org. \n\n\n\nSteve Hoffman Bio \n\n\n\nSteve Hoffman has devoted his entire 45+ year career to wildlife conservation. He served 10 years in government service\, primarily as an Endangered Species Biologist for the US Fish & Wildlife Service in the American Southwest. In 1986 Steve founded HawkWatch International. He has authored and co-authored more than 50 publications/manuscripts on raptor migration\, ecology/conservation and endangered species management. Steve continues to coordinate the local Bridger Raptor Migration Project through Bozeman-based Sacajawea Audubon Society. He also runs his own nature-based tour company\, Merlin Birding & Nature Tours\, LLC headquartered in Bozeman. Steve has given dozens of public presentations on the identification\, natural history\, migration and conservation of North American raptors. In 1979 he received his Master’s degree in Wildlife Ecology from Utah State University.

SUMMARY:October 12th - The Endangered Species Act - Monthly Program
DESCRIPTION:SAS Monthly Program & Membership Meeting: Monday\, October 12th \n\n\n\nThe Endangered Species Act: 50 Years of Conservation Success-And an Uncertain Future with Tim Preso \n\n\n\nEndangered Florida Scrub Jay. Photo: Zach Stern\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFor more than 50 years\, the Endangered Species Act has stood as our nation’s most powerful environmental law. Enacted to stem a rising tide of extinctions that threatened to claim even our national symbol\, the Bald Eagle\, the Act represented a decision by our nation to do what no country had done before\, establishing what amounts to a bill of rights for animals and plants. Half a century later\, the Act’s track record of success speaks for itself: it has prevented the extinction of 99 percent of species that have come under its protection and recovered many – including the Bald Eagle\, Brown Pelican\, and Peregrine Falcon – from their formerly imperiled status. Now\, however\, due to recent regulatory changes\, the future of the Endangered Species Act looks uncertain\, prompting the writer Terry Tempest Williams to wonder recently in the New York Times: “What if 50 years from now\, having plundered America the Beautiful and destroyed the habitat for the creatures around us\, we are plagued by an inconsolable loneliness because so many species have left us?” \n\n\n\n\n\nTim Preso is an environmental lawyer who has spent more than 25 years working to protect some of our nation’s most iconic wildlands and wildlife\, first as managing attorney of Earthjustice’s office in the Northern Rockies and more recently as leader of the organization’s national biodiversity program. He is a recognized expert in public lands\, wildlife\, and natural resources law who has worked to enforce the Endangered Species Act on behalf of species ranging from grizzly bears to Red Kknots. Tim is also a Bozeman birder and occasional leader of SAS field trips. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMembership Meeting Program Info. \n\n\n\nThe in-person meeting will be held Monday\, October 12\, 2026 at Hope Lutheran Church\, 2152 West Graf (off S. 19th). SUMMARY:Ennis Lake Waterfowl Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Leader: George Nixon 406-219-6169  hawkowl526@gmail.com  \n\n\n\nMeet at 7:45 am at the Museum of the Rockies \n\n\n\nCarpool and depart at 8:00 am \n\n\n\nThis should be near the peak time for migrating waterfowl\, grebes\, and loons.  Ennis Lake is one of the premiere staging areas for migrating waterfowl in southwestern Montana.  Thousands of ducks can be spread across the lake on any given day.  As is typical with high concentrations of birds\, there should be a wide variety of waterfowl and the possibility of a rarity being found.   Bring a lunch and other essentials as we’ll be out until mid to late afternoon.  Also\, remember to bring plenty of warm clothes as it could be cold and windy at the lake. If you have a spotting scope\, please bring it for scanning the lake.  Limit 12 people or 5 vehicles.  For more information and to make reservations\, contact George.

Within centuries-old groves that are critical refugia in a time of climate crisis\, these winged messengers show us a better way to steward our threatened landscapes. Just as a forest transitions upward from understory to midstory to overstory\, so too does the trajectory of Richie’s life—from the protective cover of adolescence to the precarious yet light-filled canopy of adulthood.Richie’s love for the wilds unfurls in poetic phrasing\, and her call to protect our last old-growth trees is resounding and clear. \n\n\n\nABOUT MARINA RICHIE \n\n\n\nMarina Richie is an award-winning nature writer with a passion for birds and wild places. Her book Halcyon Journey: In Search of the Belted Kingfisher received the 2024 John Burroughs Medal for distinguished natural history writing\, a 2022 National Outdoor Book Award (gold)\, and a Foreword Indies Award (silver). Through prose and poetry\, Marina seeks to bridge the divide separating people from nature. Her essays\, blogs\, and poems appear in popular and literary magazines. Marina has a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Montana and an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Oregon. She lives in Bend\, Oregon\, with her husband\, Wes\, and tends a bird-friendly yard. \n\n\n\nABOUT ASHLEY MARTENS \n\n\n\nAshley is the Intermountain West Regional Manager of the Old-Growth Forest Network. She grew up under the canopy of trees in the western US.  She gazed up at shimmering aspen leaves as a babe in Utah\, sought shade under ancient junipers when hunting arrowheads as a kid in Wyoming\, foraged wild mushrooms under old-growth cedars and hemlocks as a young adult in Idaho\, watched bald eagles raise their young under a giant Douglas Fir in Washington\, and currently gathers her community together under cottonwoods along creeks in Montana. Her educational and experiential background in ecology\, wildlife biology\, education\, restoration\, and mindfulness primed her perfectly for work with the Old-Growth Forest Network. Whenever she feels stressed or can’t sleep\, she imagines herself sitting on the mossy ground with her back resting against the soft trunk of a giant Grandmother Cedar Tree. In addition to her work with the Old-Growth Forest Network\, Ashley teaches are variety of nature-based classes through her business True Nature Education and the local Sacajawea Audubon Society. She loves all things wild\, and most especially birds.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://countrybookshelf.com/event/2026-11-22/marina-richie-conversation-ashley-martens

SUMMARY:Sacajawea Audubon Area Christmas Bird Counts 2026/2027
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to get ready for our annual Christmas Bird Counts! \n\n\n\nEveryone from beginner to expert birder is invited to participate in this world-wide citizen science effort. All Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) are conducted between December 14 and January 5 every year\, in established 15-mile diameter circles. Local count compilers and volunteers follow specific routes through the area\, counting every bird they see or hear throughout the day. \n\n\n\nSacajawea Audubon Society hosts a total of 7 counts\, starting with Ennis on the 1st Wednesday of the count period\, and ending with the Ruby Valley count usually held just after the New Year. Specific dates will be posted later this fall. \n\n\n\nIf your house is within a count circle\, you can also report the birds that visit your feeder as long as you’ve made arrangements with your local count compiler. (Even if you’re outside of a CBC circle\, you can always add your detections to eBird at any time!) \n\n\n\nMost counts begin and/or end with a social gathering and lots of camaraderie\, and are an annual tradition we always look forward to! \n\n\n\nFor more information\, contact Sam Koenen (email) or call (406)600-7502. Participation in all counts is free. \n\n\n\nPortrait of Red-breasted Nuthatch clinging to a stump.
