DESCRIPTION:Fall Migration Field Trips 2026 \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nTrip Leader: Josiah Kiehl 406-539-6832   josiah.kiehl@gmail.com   \n\n\n\nMeet in the Three Forks area at 8:30.   Location to be determined by the trip leader. \n\n\n\nLate August/early September is the peak of fall migration with an amazing diversity of birds passing through Montana.  This field trip will take advantage of the many birding opportunities in the greater Three Forks and Headwaters State Park areas.  This trip will last until early afternoon\, so bring a lunch and anything else you may need for a day in the field.  A scope could be helpful if you have one.  Bring your enthusiasm and your flexibility as the birding locations could change due to varying conditions. \n\n\n\nParticipants limited to 10. \n\n\n\nTo reserve a spot on the trip or for more information please contact the trip leader.

DESCRIPTION:Trip Leader: John Parker 406-586-5863 conundrumjp@gmail.com \n\n\n\nMeet at 7:45 am at the Museum of the Rockies.  Carpool and leave at 8 am. \n\n\n\nThe emphasis of this trip will be on waterfowl and shorebirds\, while exploring all the shorelines and other habitats around Harrison Reservoir.  September is the peak of the fall migration\, so we will likely be making other stops on the way to and from Harrison Reservoir to look for other migrants.  This trip will last until late afternoon\, so bring a lunch and anything else you may need for a day in the field.  Scopes will be especially useful on this trip\, as many of the birds will be distant.  There will be some walking over uneven terrain. \n\n\n\nParticipants limited to 10    \n\n\n\nTo reserve a spot on the trip or for more information please contact the trip leader.

DESCRIPTION:SAS Monthly Program & Membership Meeting: Monday\, September 14th \n\n\n\nWhere Golden Eagles Fly: 35 Years of Raptor Migration in the Bridger Mountains with Steve Hoffman \n\n\n\nFor 35 years\, the Bridger Mountains have provided a remarkable window into the annual migration of raptors across western North America. Since the project began in 1991\, observers have climbed the Bridgers each fall to document hawks\, eagles and falcons moving south along the Rocky Mountain Flyway. Among them\, the magnificent Golden Eagle has become one of the project’s most important and closely watched species. \n\n\n\nSteve Hoffman\, founder of HawkWatch International\, played a central role in establishing the Bridger Mountain Raptor Migration Project. His decades of experience have helped shape our understanding of raptor migration and the importance of long-term monitoring. \n\n\n\nThe project’s 35 years of observations have created an invaluable record of raptor migration through the Bridger Mountains. Consistent counts allow researchers to identify population trends and explore how weather\, habitat changes and other environmental pressures affect these remarkable birds. \n\n\n\nJoin us as Steve Hoffman looks back at the history of raptor migration research in the West and shares insights gained from decades of watching Golden Eagles and other raptors pass through the Bridgers. His presentation offers a unique perspective on why long-term migration projects matter: individual seasons provide snapshots\, but decades of observations reveal meaningful changes in bird populations and the ecosystems they depend upon. \n\n\n\nAfter 35 years\, the Bridger project stands as both a scientific achievement and a cherished community tradition—sustained by dedicated observers\, volunteers and the enduring fascination of watching thousands of raptors pass through Montana’s skies. \n\n\n\nMembership Meeting Program Info. \n\n\n\nThe in-person meeting will be held Monday\, September 14\, 2026 at Hope Lutheran Church\, 2152 West Graf (off S. 19th). He served 10 years in government service\, primarily as an Endangered Species Biologist for the US Fish & Wildlife Service in the American Southwest. In 1986 Steve founded HawkWatch International. He has authored and co-authored more than 50 publications/manuscripts on raptor migration\, ecology/conservation and endangered species management. Steve continues to coordinate the local Bridger Raptor Migration Project through Bozeman-based Sacajawea Audubon Society. He also runs his own nature-based tour company\, Merlin Birding & Nature Tours\, LLC headquartered in Bozeman. Steve has given dozens of public presentations on the identification\, natural history\, migration and conservation of North American raptors. In 1979 he received his Master’s degree in Wildlife Ecology from Utah State University.

SUMMARY:Bridger Raptor Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Bridger Raptor Festival is an annual event held in early October at Bridger Bowl Ski Area outside of Bozeman\, Montana. The festival\, which is free to the public\, centers around the largest known Golden Eagle migration in the United States. Since 1991 a raptor migration count has taken place every fall at the Bridger Bowl ski area in the Gallatin National Forest just north of Bozeman. Festival activities center around raptor viewing and include nature walks and talks\, educational and entertaining programs and activities for people of all ages. Please No Dogs – Live raptors will be at this event and some can spot prey from a mile away!
