SUMMARY:SAS April Program
DESCRIPTION:Sharing Landscapes: Managing Human Behavior to Protect Wild BearsWhy human attractants—not bears themselves—drive most conflicts\, and how simple actions by residents and communities can keep bears wild. \n\n\n\nGrizzly bears are moving back into landscapes they’ve been absent from for generations—just as people\, homes\, and recreation are expanding onto that same precious ground. What draws them into conflict is rarely the human/wild interface alone; it is most commonly our garbage\, fruit trees\, livestock\, birdfeeders\, and other human-related foods. In 2025\, 74 grizzly bear deaths were recorded in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem with the majority tied directly to conflicts with people. When bears gain access to calorie-rich attractants\, they quickly learn that human areas mean food. Once that association forms\, conflicts often repeat—and the bear usually pays the ultimate price. Preventable attractants are turning wild bears into management problems. \n\n\n\nBear Smart initiatives address the root cause: human behavior. By securing garbage\, properly storing food and livestock feed\, managing fruit trees\, using electric fencing for high-risk attractants\, and educating residents and visitors\, communities can dramatically reduce the likelihood that bears become food-conditioned. These programs protect public safety\, reduce property damage\, and keep bears wild. \n\n\n\nEveryone has a role to play. There are many actions we can take every day to support grizzly bears’ recovery right here where we live. Small actions taken by many people can determine whether a bear passes through a community—or becomes the next conflict statistic. Keeping bears wild starts with us. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nEvan Stout grew up in rural Maine\, where forests\, rivers\, and rugged coastlines fostered a lifelong connection to wildlife and wild places. After graduating from the University of Maine\, he guided across North America before relocating to Gardiner\, Montana in 2015. Evan now owns and operates a wildlife safari company focused on Yellowstone National Park. He also leads Bear Awareness Gardiner\, a community-based program he assumed leadership of in 2021\, advancing grizzly bear conservation by reducing human–bear conflicts through education\, attractant management\, and collaborative partnerships across Park County and the Greater Yellowstone region. \n\n\n\nEvan Stout\n\n\n\nFor virtual attendance\, please register at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/9045687013721949015. Attendees\, whether in person or virtual\, are encouraged to share their bird sightings at this and every monthly program. SAS monthly programs are free and open to the public\, feature a special guest speaker the 2nd Monday of the month\, September through May. SUMMARY:SAS Annual Meeting & Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our annual membership meeting and Sweet & Savory Potluck. A main dish\, plates and utensils will be provided. Bring a sweet or savory dish to share. Your participation in this Annual SAS Membership Meeting and Board of Directors Election is requested and highly valued. SAS is among the few remaining local member driven environmental not-for-profits. All of you as members make it what it is and determine what it will become! \n\n\n\nFollowing the potluck and board elections\, we will feature a presentation by Montana Wetlands & Waterfowl with Marc Mariano: The Last Best Flyway: Conservation in an Unexpected Landscape \n\n\n\nMontana Wetlands and Waterfowl is a grassroots conservation organization based in Butte\, Montana\, focused on wetland health\, waterfowl conservation\, and public education across the state. The organization was founded to address a gap between scientific understanding and on-the-ground conservation\, particularly in landscapes influenced by mining and restoration\, like the Upper Clark Fork. \n\n\n\nIt was started with a simple goal: connect people to wetlands and waterfowl while contributing meaningful data and restoration work. Over time\, that mission has expanded into a blend of education\, applied science\, and habitat improvement. Our work includes school and community outreach\, wetland restoration projects\, and collaborative research—such as ongoing efforts to understand contaminant exposure in local waterfowl populations. \n\n\n\nSouthwest Montana sits within a major migration corridor of the Pacific Flyway\, where seasonal movements of waterfowl depend heavily on the availability and quality of wetlands. These habitats provide critical stopover\, overwintering\, and nesting areas\, making their health essential not only locally but across the broader flyway. Ultimately\, Montana Wetlands and Waterfowl exists to ensure that wetlands remain healthy\, waterfowl populations remain strong\, and communities across Montana remain connected to both. \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nMark Mariano is a co-founder and serves as President of Montana Wetlands and Waterfowl\, a Butte-based conservation organization dedicated to wetland health\, waterfowl conservation\, and public education. His work is rooted in a deep appreciation for the ecological and cultural importance of wetlands in southwest Montana\, particularly within the Pacific Flyway migration corridor. \n\n\n\nMark has helped guide the organization from a grassroots idea into a growing nonprofit engaged in habitat restoration\, scientific research\, and statewide outreach. He plays a leading role in developing collaborative projects with landowners\, agencies\, and academic partners\, including research focused on contaminant exposure in local waterfowl populations. \n\n\n\nWith a background that blends conservation\, communication\, and hands-on fieldwork\, Mark is passionate about connecting people to the landscapes and species that define Montana. His work emphasizes practical solutions\, strong partnerships\, and ensuring that wetlands and waterfowl remain a vital part of the region’s future.

SUMMARY:June 21st Field Trip - Jackson Creek
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Lou Ann Harris406-600-3585  •  montlou311@gmail.com \n\n\n\n4-5 hour trip; moderately strenuous walking on forest road 4 miles \n\n\n\nLocated near Bozeman Pass\, this area features a surprising mix of habitats and birds. We will begin this walk by passing through wet meadows and grasslands\, and then follow Jackson Creek into higher elevation conifer forests. This is the beginning of peak breeding season\, so most of the birds should be singing and displaying at their best. Over 40 species of birds can be found along this short run of the creek\, beginning with cranes and swallows in the open country. As you work your way up the creek several species of warblers inhabit the willows on one side of the road\, while on the dry slopes an entirely different set of birds can be found. Once in the upper forest\, some higher elevation birds will begin to make their presence known.  \n\n\n\nMeet at Museum of the Rockies at 6:45 AM  8-person limit.
