SUMMARY:SAS April Program
DESCRIPTION:Sharing Landscapes: Managing Human Behavior to Protect Wild BearsWhy human attractants—not bears themselves—drive most conflicts\, and how simple actions by residents and communities can keep bears wild. \n\n\n\nGrizzly bears are moving back into landscapes they’ve been absent from for generations—just as people\, homes\, and recreation are expanding onto that same precious ground. What draws them into conflict is rarely the human/wild interface alone; it is most commonly our garbage\, fruit trees\, livestock\, birdfeeders\, and other human-related foods. In 2025\, 74 grizzly bear deaths were recorded in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem with the majority tied directly to conflicts with people. When bears gain access to calorie-rich attractants\, they quickly learn that human areas mean food. Once that association forms\, conflicts often repeat—and the bear usually pays the ultimate price. Preventable attractants are turning wild bears into management problems. \n\n\n\nBear Smart initiatives address the root cause: human behavior. By securing garbage\, properly storing food and livestock feed\, managing fruit trees\, using electric fencing for high-risk attractants\, and educating residents and visitors\, communities can dramatically reduce the likelihood that bears become food-conditioned. These programs protect public safety\, reduce property damage\, and keep bears wild. \n\n\n\nEveryone has a role to play. There are many actions we can take every day to support grizzly bears’ recovery right here where we live. Small actions taken by many people can determine whether a bear passes through a community—or becomes the next conflict statistic. Keeping bears wild starts with us. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nEvan Stout grew up in rural Maine\, where forests\, rivers\, and rugged coastlines fostered a lifelong connection to wildlife and wild places. After graduating from the University of Maine\, he guided across North America before relocating to Gardiner\, Montana in 2015. Evan now owns and operates a wildlife safari company focused on Yellowstone National Park. He also leads Bear Awareness Gardiner\, a community-based program he assumed leadership of in 2021\, advancing grizzly bear conservation by reducing human–bear conflicts through education\, attractant management\, and collaborative partnerships across Park County and the Greater Yellowstone region. \n\n\n\nEvan Stout\n\n\n\nFor virtual attendance\, please register at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/9045687013721949015. Attendees\, whether in person or virtual\, are encouraged to share their bird sightings at this and every monthly program. SUMMARY:March Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we discuss Graeme Gibson’s The Bedside Book of Birds: An Avian Miscellany\, Reprinted in 2021 with a foreword by Gibson’s wife and writer\, Margaret Atwood. Atwood writes: “What he was after [in this book] was the many ways birds have affected people throughout many centuries and many cultures.”  \n\n\n\nAnd Gibson himself explains: “It is about the richly varied and sometimes very intimate relationships that we have established with them [avian life] during the hundreds of thousands of years that we have shared life on earth.”  \n\n\n\nMany good bird books have been published in recent years\, but this 20 year labor of love is different. Canadian novelist and birdwatcher Gibson has assembled all manner of artistic forms that our affinity for birds have been expressed in; paintings\, poems\, essays\, stories\, creation myths\, scientific observations and even recipes. Contributors are legion: ancient and modern\, primitive and accomplished\, famous and obscure…. Gibson’s own graceful and erudite essays are as satisfying as are the other texts and illustrations. The literature is as diverse as Ovid\, Thomas Hardy\, Kafka\, Thoreau and T.S. Eliot. Birds figure charmingly and tellingly in the work of such nature writers as Gilbert White\, Peter Matthiessen\, Farley Mowat and Barry Lopez. The book contains more than 100 stunning images of birds depicted in bestiaries\, folk art\, ancient sculpture and works of artists such as Audubon\, Landsdowne\, and Catesby.  \n\n\n\nThe Globe and Mail (Toronto) which judged this a Best Book of the Year states: “Put this on your list for those who love birds\, for those who appreciate fine writing and beautiful art\, and for those who wish to accompany a noble mind on a journey into the heart of things.” \n\n\n\nWe meet the third Wednesday of the month through April at Hope Lutheran Church\, Room 123 from 6:30 to 7:45 PM. We will meet this month on March 18th and hope to see you there. If you have any questions please call or email Hilary Johnson at (406) 599-1446 or ralphhilary@gmail.com. To join virtually please email Sarah Paulos ahead of time at Sarahmarilynpaulos@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:SAS March 9th Program with Ashley Martens
DESCRIPTION:Old-Growth Forest Features and the Birds who Depend on Them\n\n\n\nAll forest stages have an important ecological role to play. The old-growth stage of a forest is especially important because of its structural and functional complexity. Micro habitats\, thick bark\, and standing dead trees provide food and shelter for many bird species. We’ll explore some old-growth forest features and some bird species that depend on them in Montana and the greater northwestern United States. Expect some hands-on learning. \n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker\n\n\n\nEver since hand-feeding chickadees with her grandparents as a young child\, Ashley Martens has sought out intimate relationships with nature through both scientific inquiry and mindful nature-connection.  After meandering her way through studying the life sciences in her young adulthood\, she finally settled on a B.S. in Biology\, an M.S. in Environmental Science\, and certifications in teaching yoga\, dance\, and meditation. Becoming a naturalist takes time and attention. With experiences ranging from hunting arrowheads in the gullies of high-desert Wyoming as a child\, to surveying woodpeckers in the backwoods of north Idaho\, to researching seabirds on a remote wildlife refuge island in the Strait of Juan de Fuca\, to reintroducing Mountain Quail in eastern Washington\, Ashley weaves all of her experiences into her work. She brings her values of lifelong-learning and community-building forward in her teaching and facilitation.  Her approach is to empower your learning journey by guiding you to learn from nature\, rather than simply learning about it.  She now serves as the Intermountain West regional manager for the Old-Growth Forest Network.  \n\n\n\nPhoto courtesy of Ashley Martens\n\n\n\nFor virtual attendance\, please register at https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/2698835306866205785 Attendees\, whether in person or virtual\, are encouraged to share their bird sightings at this and every monthly program. Program begins at 7pm. Hope Lutheran Church\, 2152 W. Graf St\, Bozeman\n\n\n\nProfessor Jack Kirkley and his wife\, Brenda\, took wildlife-viewing safaris in East Africa during the summers of 2024 and 2025. Their travels included the Serengeti Plains of Tanzania and the mountain forests of southern Uganda\, guided by expert naturalists with exceptional birding skills and deep knowledge of the region’s remarkable wildlife. \n\n\n\nBirdwatching in East Africa offers a unique experience to observe a wide variety of birds in stunning natural settings. Many national parks and reserves are designated to protect birds. \n\n\n\nJack’s presentation will showcase the spectacular diversity of birds they encountered along the way—and yes\, he’ll also share images of a few other fascinating animals as well. Lions and leopards and apes… oh my! \n\n\n\nPhoto courtesy of Jack Kirkley.\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nTo watch this program virtually\, please register at: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/949538694746104665 \n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker\n\n\n\nJack Kirkley earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology at Ohio Wesleyan University in 1975\, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in biology-ecology at Utah State University in 1985.  Jack retired in 2021 after his 36-year career as a biology professor at UM-Western in Dillon. \n\n\n\nJack is an ornithologist who has specialized in the study of birds of prey. For 30 years\, Jack has conducted studies on the ecology of American Goshawks in southwestern Montana.  He also studied the physiological ecology of long-distance migration in Swainson’s Hawks\, a species which migrates each fall to Argentina. From 2014-2018\, Jack opportunistically studied a small colony of nesting Great-tailed Grackles in Dillon\, where he documented the first confirmed instances of nesting by this species in Montana\, as well as the first DNA-confirmed hybridization of a Great-tailed Grackle with a Common Grackle \n\n\n\n\n\nJack Kirkley in East Africa.

SUMMARY:SAS January Program
DESCRIPTION:Understanding The Mysterious Great Gray Owl\n\n\n\nWith Arcata Leavitt\n\n\n\nMonday evening\, January 12th. Social starts at 6:30. Program begins at 7pm. Hope Lutheran Church\, 2152 W. Graf St\, Bozeman\n\n\n\nWhat is known about the elusive Great Gray Owl locally? They are known as the “Ghosts of the Forest” throughout their range here in the intermountain west and the boreal forests and wooded bogs of the far north. Though not our heaviest owl\, Strix nebulosa is our largest owl\, and many would say most impressive. Their enormous size and silence\, combined with the glare from their piercing yellow eyes captivates the onlooker. Those lucky enough to encounter a Great Gray Owl are unlikely to ever forget. Their sheer size and distinctive eyes make them unlikely to be mistaken for their smaller dark-eyed cousins\, the Barred and Spotted Owls (where their ranges overlap). Have you been lucky enough to see one of these forest ghosts? Come and share your ghost story. \n\n\n\nJoin us as Arcata Leavitt\, the 2nd recipient of the Sacajawea Audubon Society Bob Moore Scholarship\, informs us about the research she is conducting\, and you are funding\, so that we may know more about these secretive creatures. This event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nTo watch this program virtually\, please register at: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/7207416820182258014 \n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker\n\n\n\nArcata Leavitt is a master’s student in the Becker Lab at Montana State University studying Great Gray Owls (Strix nebulosa) in southwest Montana. Her research is part of a collaboration with Montana Fish\, Wildlife\, & Parks\, the US Forest Service\, and MSU to evaluate Great Gray Owl nesting habitat characteristics and investigate the efficacy of using bioacoustic monitoring to locate nests and evaluate productivity. This effort aims to provide wildlife managers with tools to target survey and conservation efforts and improve our understanding of this enigmatic species. Arcata received her B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Science from Oregon State University\, and before coming to MSU she worked with songbirds\, small mammals\, and loons in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. \n\n\n\n\n\nArcata Leavitt

SUMMARY:A Search for the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon in Papua New Guinea with Jason Gregg
DESCRIPTION:SAS November ProgramMonday evening\, November 10th. Social starts at 6:30. Lecture begins at 7pm. Hope Lutheran Church\, 2152 W. Graf St.\, Bozeman \n\n\n\n\nFrom the rugged islands of southeast Papua New Guinea to the vaults of the American Museum of Natural History\, join conservation biologist Jason Gregg for a talk about his search for the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon\, a secretive and extremely rare bird which was lost to science for more than 125 years. SUMMARY:Bird Song Revelations from Nature’s Finest Musicians with Cedar Mathis-Winn
DESCRIPTION:This program is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nSAS Monthly ProgramMonday\, October 13 – Hope Lutheran ChurchBird Song Revelations from Nature’s Finest Musicians with Cedar Mathis-WinnFor millennia\, humans have listened with awe to the songs of birds. However\, it wasn’t until the 1970s that we began to understand the bizarre methods and structures that birds use to create their mesmerizing songs. Of course\, there is still much left unknown\, but we have learned a great deal about what is happening inside the body of a bird that allows him (or her) to produce the sounds we hear.In this presentation\, we will explore the mind-bending abilities that allow birds to produce some of the most extraordinary music in the world. We will discuss the variety of calls and songs that birds produce\, as well as how these sounds are adapted to their specific uses and the lives of the birds who use them. Most of all\, this talk is intended to open your ears to the fascinating depth and complexity of sounds that surround us anytime we’re outside.Cedar Mathers-Winn is a naturalist\, biologist\, and educator based in Bozeman\, MT. Particularly obsessed with the sounds of the natural world\, he has taken a long and circuitous path through a variety of jobs and ecosystems. Cedar has been a recordist on an ethnomusicology expedition in Bhutan\, and an audio archivist of music (Smithsonian Institute) and natural sound recordings (Cornell Lab of Ornithology). He started his career in biology as a chaser and observer of birds in the mountain West\, the lush Northeast\, the desert Southwest\, the tropics of Australia\, and the jungles of the Dominican Republic.  He earned his Master’s degree studying communication in wintering flocks of birds at the University of Montana. Cedar has always been passionate about sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for nature. He has taught career biologists\, professional guides\, undergrads\, and anyone else who will listen. As an educator\, Cedar uses the everyday subtleties of nature to reveal worlds of wildness hidden in plain sight. Cedar produces and provides several of SAS’s educational workshops. He has also taught SAS’s Master Naturalist Course for the past two years. The in-person meeting will be held Monday\, October 13\, 2025 at Hope Lutheran Church\, 2152 West Graf (off S. 19th)  A social begins at 6:30 PM; the program begins at 7:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own reusable cups.  cFor virtual attendance\, please register at sacajaweaaudubon.org/program.Attendees—whether in person or virtual—are encouraged to share their bird sightings at this and every monthly program.SAS monthly programs are free and open to the public\, featuring a special guest speaker the 2nd Monday of each month\, September through May.
